A Roanoke Creekside Family Session

Creek Family Photos | Roanoke & Blacksburg Family Photographer

There’s a reason creek sessions will forever be one of my favorite ways to photograph families.

There’s no pressure for kids to stand perfectly still or smile at the camera the entire time. They get to explore, splash, jump, throw rocks, get their clothes wet and just be kids. And somewhere in the middle of all that fun, we get the photos that really feel like them.

This session was even more special because I’ve been photographing this family since before there were kiddos to chase through the creek. Getting to watch these boys grow up in front of my camera—and see their personalities change every year—is one of the very best parts of being a family photographer.

And when the family dogs get to come along? Even better.

We started with a few of the family photos everyone wants, but it didn’t take long before shoes came off and everyone ended up in the water. There was splashing, swinging, wet dogs, lots of laughing and absolutely no expectation that two little boys were going to behave like anything other than two little boys.

Exactly how a family session should be.

Family Photos That Feel Like Your Family

Some of my favorite images from a session are rarely the most perfectly posed ones. They’re the ones that immediately bring you back to this stage of life—the way your toddler still wants to be tossed into the air, the way siblings play together, the dog who refuses to stay out of the water.

Those little things change so quickly.

Creek sessions give us room to photograph all of it while still creating the beautiful family portraits you’ll want hanging in your home. Your kids have something to do, which takes so much of the pressure off everyone.

No asking them to smile every five seconds. No worrying if they’re getting a little dirty.

Just come ready to play.
